| Bilingual High School OBERWART First Graduation Diploma |
|
The bilingual public high school Oberwart (Borta, Felsöör)
was founded on September 9th, 1992. On June 6th, 2000 the first generation
of pupils of this unique high school received their graduation diploma.
These pupils have attended our school since they were ten years old. Now
at the age of eighteen they have taken their graduation exams and thus
have Permission to visit a university.
What makes our school so special ? First of all our school is thought to be for the members of the Hungarian and the Croatian ethnic groups of the Burgenland. Therefore there are two departments in our school. There is the German-Hungarian department where all the lessons are taught in German as well as in Hungarian except in the German, English and maths lessons. In the German-Croatian department the lessons are taught in the same manner. This means that for example the teacher of the subject geography explains the material of the subject in German and revises it in Croatian. This bilingual system is a great challenge for our teachers and it sharpens through its contrastive system the intelligence of our pupils. Our graduates will, at least we hope so, play an important part when it comes to strengthening the identity of the Hungarians and the Croatians of the Burgenland. Our school has 16 classes and a total of 240 pupils. In the eight German-Hungarian classes 120 pupils attend lessons and in the eight German-Croatian classes also 120 pupils attend the lessons. On average there are about 15 pupils per class, which enables the teachers to pay more attention to each Student. In the lower classes there are normally more pupils than in the upper classes: It is very pleasing that so many people are interested in our school. Even this year many pupils will be attending both of our first classes. On the whole 9 languages are taught in our school (German, Hungarian, Croatian, English, French, Latin, Spanish, Italian and Russian). Each pupil can learn at least 4 languages, and if he wants to, he can learn up to 6 languages. At the moment the first graduates have left our school. Ten graduates were in the German- Hungarian class and 8 in the German- Croatian class. They were dismissed in a very beautiful ceremony. The media have reported about it (radio shows, TV reports, newspaper articles not only in Austria but also in Hungary and Croatia). Not only in Austria but in all of Europe many people are interested in our school. Many delegations from home and abroad have visited our school. But also two state presidents saw our school: the Hungarian President Göncz and the Austrian President Klestil. Also the ministers for education, Scholten and Gehrer visited our school. The
architectural modern design of our beautiful, new school and the 45
teachers give lessons in our school in a very familiar atmosphere. The
principal of this school since its foundation is the 45- year- old Martin
Zsivkovits from the village Stinatz/ Stinjaki.
