A new church bell
and a kind of a writer’s anniversary

The Cathedral of Eisenstadt has got a new, additional bell on Easter Monday. The bell was made in Innsbruck (province of Tyrol) and had been tuned to D/2. It is now completing the musical motif of “Salve regina“ of the entire bell ensemble of Eisenstadt’s Basilica. Whether the authorities of the Diocesis of Eisenstadt nor the priests of Eisenstadt did even know that a bell of this tune had been missing in this ensemble. It was not until a disaster event, when one bell and the belfry were damaged, that this has been noticed at all. The former bishop of the Diocesis of Eisenstadt, Dr. Paul Iby, now consecrated the new bell of 185 kilogram weight (it´s about 400 pounds). It was paid from the proceeds of a fundraising organised by Erwin Tinhof, of the best known Eisenstadt winemakers, when he was celebrating his 50th birthday. Approximately 250 guests at his birthday party contributed to the very special fundraising. If you like to see and even hear the bell´s sound use http://youtube.com/LtlFbDRNito .

She is known to many people in Burgenland: the writer Anny Polster of Müllendorf celebrates a special kind of literature anniversary. She is writing for exactly 60 years now. Anny Polster, born in 1924, had a great interest in literature even as a child. Then, she used to open the small door of the kitchen stove and read her books in the glow of the embers - that´s what she told once in an interview. At the age of 13, she participated in the young writer´s contest of a newspaper. In 1953, Anny Polster started her long and successful career as a writer, when for the first time an essay of her´s was published. A total of six entire books has been published by her in the last six decades, the last one called „An des Tages Schwelle“ (“On the threshold of the day“) was edited in 2012. This historical document contains notices of art and culture and of the agricultural situation in the postwar period. Anny Polster is also known for her poems. Some of the most famous ones are „Das Blümchen“ (“Little flower“) and „Die Straße” („The Street“). She has been writing preferably in burgenländisch dialect. During an interview Anny Polster told that she as a young woman wanted to become a teacher, but unfortunately a lack of funds did not allow her to let her dream come true. After the early death of her mother she as a graduate of a business school looked after her father and worked as a secretary in Eisenstadt. She worked in this job until she retired. Anny Polster is living in the nursing home of „Haus St. Martin“ in Eisenstadt for two years now. She was awarded some numerous literary prizes for her literary work by the Province of Burgenland and by the Republic of Austria. Moreover, the “Burgenländische Gemeinschaft” honored its member Anny Polster by awarding her the Honor Pin (Ehrennadel).
